Bruno Fernandes in action
Bruno Fernandes said sorry for Manchester United’s really bad loss to Bournemouth. The Portugal star admitted that his team didn’t try hard enough and didn’t play well. Bournemouth won 3-0, and it was the first time United lost a game at home to a lower-ranked team. The performance was so bad that the fans even booed at the end. As the pressure increases on their coach Erik ten Hag, Fernandes believes the players are to blame for the poor showing.
“I’m sorry for how we played. It wasn’t okay, especially starting with me. I’m not talking about anyone else,” he stated.
“But I believe everyone in the locker room agrees that our performance wasn’t up to our usual standard, and we need to do a lot better.”
“We didn’t perform well in terms of quality, effort, and aggressiveness. It wasn’t as good as our last game against Chelsea.”
“If you don’t do your job, you won’t win the game.”
Unsteady United lost 11 out of 23 games in all competitions this season.
After the Bournemouth game, Ten Hag admitted that he doesn’t think his team has the quality to be consistently good at the highest level.
Fernandes mentioned that he doesn’t understand why United can’t keep up a consistent streak of good performances.
“I don’t know why it was so different from the Chelsea game, but it has consistently been like this,” Fernandes said to MUTV.
“When we win a game, the next one, we don’t play as well as we did before.”
“I’m not sure if it’s a lack of concentration, focus, or something else, but we need to realize that after winning a game, we have to maintain the consistency of winning.”
“Even if we’re not playing our best, we need to still get the result.”
United has a short time to figure things out as they get ready for a crucial Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. They can only move forward if they win, and the other Group A game between Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw.
Next is a Premier League match against rivals Liverpool next Sunday, a game that Fernandes will miss because he got his fifth booking of the season against Bournemouth.
“We know the next game is going to be tough,” Fernandes acknowledged.
“We have to win and, of course, hope for a positive result in the other game for us.”
“But our priority is to do our job, knowing and understanding that the upcoming game is going to be challenging for us.”
“But we are capable, more than able, to achieve the desired result.”
