Blending youth and experience, the Indian badminton contingent competing at the Syed Modi International 2023 in Lucknow aims to make a mark on the home courts, starting from Tuesday.

The Syed Modi India International, a BWF Super 300 event, stands as the premier badminton competition in the country this year. The results from this event will contribute to players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. All matches will be live-streamed in India.

Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth will spearhead the Indian men’s contingent. However, the two world championship medallists have been grappling with recent form struggles. Youngsters Priyanshu Rajawat, Kiran George, and Mithun Manjunath are also in contention.

Initially holding the top seed in Lucknow, HS Prannoy, India’s top player in the badminton rankings at world No. 8, withdrew at the last minute. Additionally, world No. 17 Lakshya Sen, initially seeded fourth, also decided to withdraw from the competition.

PV Sindhu has chosen not to defend her women’s singles title at the Syed Modi India International badminton tournament, having opted for protective rankings earlier this month. Nonetheless, young talents such as Unnati Hooda, the youngest Indian badminton player to secure a BWF title, along with Malvika Bansod and former junior world No. 1 Tasnim Mir, will be eager to make a lasting impression.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand, will lead the way as the top Indian pair in women’s doubles. In the same category, Tanisha Crasto will partner with Ashwini Ponnappa and aim to defend her mixed doubles crown alongside Dhruv Kapila. Crasto secured the mixed doubles title with Ishaan Bhatnagar last year.

Following the Syed Modi International, back-to-back BWF Super 100 events are set to take place in Guwahati and Odisha in the first two weeks of December.
