Nick Kyrgios had to quit the Australian Open on Saturday because he’s still having a hard time getting fit after being away for a long time due to injury. He described the decision as “heartbreaking.” Kyrgios had knee surgery in January and had to cancel his return at Wimbledon because of a wrist ligament tear. Last month, he mentioned that everything would have to come together perfectly for him to be ready for the Australian Grand Slam in January, and on Saturday, he confirmed that he ran out of time.

“This is a really sad time for me, but I won’t be able to take part in the 2024 Australian Open,” Kyrgios shared on the subscription website OnlyFans, where he recently started creating content.

“It’s heartbreaking. I’ve had so many great memories there, and I just want to get back to playing at my best and doing it right. I need a bit more time.”

“Even though I won’t be competing in the AO this year, I’ll still be around, commentating on matches, just being present,” he added.

Kyrgios mentioned last month that his main motivation is still winning a Grand Slam. He came closest at Wimbledon in 2022 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final.

The Australian Open takes place from January 14 to 28 at Melbourne Park, where Aryna Sabalenka is defending the women’s title, and Djokovic is defending the men’s title.

Kyrgios won’t be playing, but Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, is on the entry list despite not playing since this year’s Australian Open due to injury.

Also on the entry list is Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, who welcomed her daughter Shai in July. She hasn’t played since September 2022, facing challenges with her mental health.
